Devices - Day 7 - DFI Online

LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other
  • Lots of people really enjoying working on their class sites and looking forward to directing their kids to them
  • I think the pieces of the Maniakalani 'puzzle' are coming together for our bubble
  • So cool to see peoples confidence growing each week to use all the Google Workspace tools

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani: Dorothy
  • Ubiquitous DFI Ubiquitous - removing barriers so that learning can take place anytime, anywhere, any pace and from anyone 24/7
  • We are empowered by choice - this is where visible learning is so important. Learners being able to go onto other teachers class sites for learning particularly in the senior subjects
  • Conversation is really important for our children's learning
  • Running up a down escalator  - the summer slump
  • Using digital technology needs to be transformative otherwise we might as well go back to a $1 pencil

3. Deep Dive: Maria
  • CyberSmart Curriculum - shifting from the 'don'ts' to the 'do's'!
  • Being specific about the words we use e.g. empowering rather than protecting
  • Positive, helpful, thoughtful  = quality blog comment

4. Chalk 'n Talk: Kerry
  • Manaiakalani 1:1 Journey
  • We are a 1:1 school / we are an ipad class / we are a chromebook class rather than a BYOD school / class

5. Explore: Life as a Chromebook user
  • Chromebook Simulator
  • Digital Dig

6. Chalk 'n Talk: Recording your screen: Vicki
  • Slides
  • Install Screencastify / Tāhopmata

7. Chalk 'n Talk: Using learning devices: Kelsey
  • iPad Presentation
  • Manaiakalani iPad PLD Site

8. Explore: In Bubble Groups
  • An opportunity to have a play with the iPad app Explain Everything. A fascinating app that has heaps of scope. Going to take a while to explore this tool! Unfortunately on the trial version I was using I couldn't save it as a 'video' to include my sound bite. But here is a screen shot to show what the app it is capable of.

9. Hāpara Hots Tips #6
  • Workspaces - a fabulous resource of learning content from all around the world available to use

CREATE:

  • Time to get creative with Screen Recording: a bit of research to be done here as my Macbook Air would not let me record. using Screencastify. After trying to figure out what was going on I finally Googled it(!) and saw that maybe I had to sign-out of Chrome and re-enter to get it to work after changing my screen sharing preferences. Need to go back when I get a chance to see if that fixed it. So sorry... no beautiful recording of my voice/face describing Smart Relationships!

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • More evidence really that just giving a learner a device does not in itself improve learning!

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • Rewindable learning - it's value is becoming more evident as we journey along

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • Looking forward to having a bit more time to explore using a Chromebook

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • Needed to take some deep breath's today as things did not work as I expected. Off to see the 18 year old to ask if it is my settings on my MacBook Air that are stopping things from working as they should!
  • EDIT: logged out of Chrome and we were all good to go.
"Have ya tried turning it off and back on again?" - that would have been the 18 year olds first comment!

  1. Fabulous problem solving there Meryn! The old turn it off and back on again trick! Glad you were able to get your screen cast recorded. One of the ways I've used screencastify is when facilitating if we've run out of time, I've demo'd the last part of the lesson and recorded it at the same time, then added to the class site and the students have access to the rewindable content before I've even walked out the door!

To support my learning I ask that you comment as follows:
1. Something POSITIVE - begin with a greeting then say something you like about what I have shared
2. Something THOUGHTFUL - a comment that will mean something to me to let me know that you read / watched or listened to what I had to say. Please use any language.
3. Something HELPFUL - give me some ideas for next time or ask me a question
Encourage me to make another post.
