External Recognition - Day 9 - DFI Online

External Recognition Agenda Day 9

Online Cohort 1, 2021

LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other
  • Last time in our digital bubbles! 😢I have so enjoyed getting to know these wonderful peeps/educators over the last nine weeks. I am sure I've probably talked too much and listened too little as I've found myself trying to verbally encourage them to keep going when it all became a bit manic! But then again I think that if we ever met at a coffee shop there would be plenty of banter, talking over one another and laughter from everyone. Thank you so much Tasmin, Malvina, Sam, Mike, Wendy, Fatima, Mike, Jason and the ever patient Vicki - you gals and guys are awesome and seeing your smiling faces on screen every Wednesday has been a highlight of my first term with Manaiakalani Outreach.

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani
  • See reflections below...

3. Manaiakalani Opportunities
  • Wow - plenty of opportunities there to extend and expand your teaching practice and digital fluency with Manaiakalani

4. Deep Dive: External Recognition Opportunities
  • Google Educator Level 2 Exam
    • Definitely a bit more challenging than Level 1. I suspect my puzzled expressions at some of the multi-choice questions at the beginning of this particular exam are because I am not an American - I think we think a bit different here in Aotearoa about how to engage with our learners! Some scenario questions I found a bit confusing as to what they were actually asking me to do and I had to keep going back to the instructions to reread them again. Two presentation screens might have been a winner on the day? I did have an iPad but forgot to sidecar it - silly me. Some other scenarios I flew through. Unfortunately while trying to embed a Google Maps journey into a Google Site my computer wouldn't upload it for some reason the first time around so I did run out of time to go back to three questions I had wanted to review. Never mind. Really couldn't say what the final outcome will be. Whether I pass this time or have to resit, it was a good experience and I have a much better idea of what to expect the next time around... if that is what has to happen. I think I am content that everything (even pivot tables - not that I understand what they really do!) was familiar to me and it is just a matter of learning how to do things more efficiently and more speedily to get through the scenarios with more time up your sleeve to go back and check those pesky multi-choice questions!

5. Bling your Blog
  • He he! Not sure if it is the 'Kiwi way' and I am not normally into blowing my own trumpet, but I really want to add my DFI badges and certificates to anything and everything! Do they come as car bumper stickers?!?

6. DFI Demo Slam
  • Some really cool apps, links and ideas in this slide deck! Worth a cup or two of coffee and an afternoon browsing in the sunshine this weekend.

7. Fun and Games

REFLECTIONS:

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • I started my facilitation role with a very basic understanding of who Manaiakalani was, what they were trying to achieve and how they sought to do that. I think my favourite part of each DFI day was seeing, hearing (and feeling!) how the Manaiakalani puzzle pieces fit together. I now see more clearly the big picture and each deep dive into the Maniakalani kaupapa and pedagogy enabled me to understand the parts that make up the whole so I can carry out my role better. It has been challenging to keep up with the digital fluency aspects some weeks but rewindable learning is now my best friend!
2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • I have learnt to give it a go. Google Search is powerful and is always there as a backup. And if you don't know something, and a Google Search still turns up a blank some wonderful DFI participant or coach will know a work around! And they are only a text, an email or Google Meet away!

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • I get such a kick out of being able to direct my in class support teachers to resources or tips with Google Suite that enable them to work more confidently and efficiently in the digital world. We are all growing in our knowledge and skills together which is awesome. As I mentioned further up the page, getting to know the people in our wee bubble has also been a highlight. Teachers are such an interesting bunch!

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • I think the DFI Online course is an amazingly well run machine! Vicki and her team of bubble coaches have done a fantastic job of disseminating vast quantities of knowledge and skills in an engaging and meaningful way. I feel very privileged to have been able to do this course as part of my own PLD. It has set me up with the confidence to push into things I might otherwise have skirted around because they looked too 'hard' or complicated. Dare I say it... you CAN teach an ol' dog new tricks! I still have a huge amount to learn with regards to digital fluency but now I know that I am capable of learning at my own speed (yes I probably am a bit slower at it than the 18 year old!) and building on new knowledge each time I use a skill again.
Ngā mihi nui for this opportunity.

SHARE:

10. Blogging / Rangitaiki - Jeremy
  • Sharing via Social Media and Display Names

REFLECTIONS:

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • I felt myself getting quite emotional hearing Dorothy this morning talking and watching the Nigel Latta video about the lack of choice some of our whānau experience. We live in a beautiful land... full of inequity.

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • I really enjoyed digging into coding today. It is something I have skirted around the edges of for a long time, probably because I felt it was beyond my skill set. But the most encouraging thing was a video where the presenter stated that even university level learners begin with the basics we were exploring!

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • Scratched Jr - can see heaps of uses in lots of different areas... maths, reading, art
  • Didn't quite get my animation connected but keen to keep having another play with this app
  • Still working out how to upload onto this blog... watch this space!

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • I think coming to the end of this course I have probably covered the full A-Z range of emotions... apprehension, bravery, fear, excitement, encouragement, exhilaration, frustration, panic(!), relief, zeal... but mainly gratitude for the opportunity to explore everything we have over the last eight weeks. What a journey!

Devices - Day 7 - DFI Online

LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other
  • Lots of people really enjoying working on their class sites and looking forward to directing their kids to them
  • I think the pieces of the Maniakalani 'puzzle' are coming together for our bubble
  • So cool to see peoples confidence growing each week to use all the Google Workspace tools

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani: Dorothy
  • Ubiquitous DFI Ubiquitous - removing barriers so that learning can take place anytime, anywhere, any pace and from anyone 24/7
  • We are empowered by choice - this is where visible learning is so important. Learners being able to go onto other teachers class sites for learning particularly in the senior subjects
  • Conversation is really important for our children's learning
  • Running up a down escalator  - the summer slump
  • Using digital technology needs to be transformative otherwise we might as well go back to a $1 pencil

3. Deep Dive: Maria
  • CyberSmart Curriculum - shifting from the 'don'ts' to the 'do's'!
  • Being specific about the words we use e.g. empowering rather than protecting
  • Positive, helpful, thoughtful  = quality blog comment

4. Chalk 'n Talk: Kerry
  • Manaiakalani 1:1 Journey
  • We are a 1:1 school / we are an ipad class / we are a chromebook class rather than a BYOD school / class

5. Explore: Life as a Chromebook user
  • Chromebook Simulator
  • Digital Dig

6. Chalk 'n Talk: Recording your screen: Vicki
  • Slides
  • Install Screencastify / Tāhopmata

7. Chalk 'n Talk: Using learning devices: Kelsey
  • iPad Presentation
  • Manaiakalani iPad PLD Site

8. Explore: In Bubble Groups
  • An opportunity to have a play with the iPad app Explain Everything. A fascinating app that has heaps of scope. Going to take a while to explore this tool! Unfortunately on the trial version I was using I couldn't save it as a 'video' to include my sound bite. But here is a screen shot to show what the app it is capable of.

9. Hāpara Hots Tips #6
  • Workspaces - a fabulous resource of learning content from all around the world available to use

CREATE:

  • Time to get creative with Screen Recording: a bit of research to be done here as my Macbook Air would not let me record. using Screencastify. After trying to figure out what was going on I finally Googled it(!) and saw that maybe I had to sign-out of Chrome and re-enter to get it to work after changing my screen sharing preferences. Need to go back when I get a chance to see if that fixed it. So sorry... no beautiful recording of my voice/face describing Smart Relationships!

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • More evidence really that just giving a learner a device does not in itself improve learning!

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • Rewindable learning - it's value is becoming more evident as we journey along

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • Looking forward to having a bit more time to explore using a Chromebook

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • Needed to take some deep breath's today as things did not work as I expected. Off to see the 18 year old to ask if it is my settings on my MacBook Air that are stopping things from working as they should!
  • EDIT: logged out of Chrome and we were all good to go.
"Have ya tried turning it off and back on again?" - that would have been the 18 year olds first comment!

17 March 2021

Enabling Access Sites - Day 6 - DFI Online

 LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other

  • Lots of conversation about doing Google Sites - mainly around having to take time to think about the structure and do it well ... and that it won't "happen overnight!"
  • Everyone seems really excited to be able to use their new found skills to move forward into getting a site set up - go bubble buddies!

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani

  • CONNECTED - one of the joists in the Manaiakalani whare
  • Digital connection is a powerful way to connect - we all want to share
  • Connecting us to a powerful network of schools and cement the idea of 'belonging'
  • Deep, powerful relationships take time
  • A Shared Language keeps us together - it looks so different in every context but it enables us to connect and gives focus
  • The act of sharing creates connections - the way to make a powerful connection both parties need to SHARE
    • Manaiakalani Twitter Feed
    • Tuhi Mai, Tuhi Atu
    • Secondary Connects
    • Teo Reo Māori Toolkits
    • Manaiakalani Mailouts
    • Blogger
    • Toolkits Online
  • We need to have all four elements of the kaupapa of connected, ubiquitous, visible and empowered occurring

3. Chalk 'n Talk: Vicki

  • Leading learning with Google Sites
    • designing it for accessibility for our learners and our whānau
    • purpose = one stop hub for learning
  • Theme / Layout / Fonts all important considerations
  • 3 click learning!

4. Explore: Vicki

  • We were able to explore a range of class learning sites and critic them from a visual appeal / user experience aspect
  • Some amazing sites out there!
  • Some common themes helpful to think about when developing our own sites

5. Chalk 'n Talk: Vicki

6. Explore

7. Levelling Up

CREATE: Making meaning of content

8. Creating via Sites

  • I have been wanted to have a play with making buttons on Google Sites and this was the time... although it doesn't look like much work to get seven buttons on a screen the work in behind to get them all the same size and getting them looking consistent is quite laborious. Think I have the muscle memory sorted for doing it from go to whoa now. Yay! This is just a screen shot of the site as it is a sand pit facilitation site and I need to see how my cluster would like to proceed with developing this. My apologies to Manukorihi Intermediate as I have to hunt down a higher spec logo for them and to Coastal Taranaki for dropping their logo off my screen capture!

SHARE: Embed and Rewind Content

9. Hāpara Hot Tip: Vicki

  • workspace from the student view (student dashboard)
  • cool because if student can access work via  phone or tablet too (no excuses if Chromebook is not charged!)

10. Blogging Tips

  • Find anything offensive as a comment, click it and send it to Spam FIRST ... then go to Spam and delete it - this will force Google to deal with it

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • I think now every time I hear from Dorothy about the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy it cements how amazing it is to be given this 'gift' to share in Taranaki. I am truly blessed to be part of this journey.

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • Just having time to work again on Google Sites has been great. I learn more each time I get a chance to have a play

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • How to do site buttons! This is one of the first things I saw being done with Fiona Grant at the Manaiakalani Orientation Day and it looked so cool... but sooo confusing. I'm glad now I've conquered it to share with my in class support teachers!

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • I am really appreciating that the learning that is required next for us setting up a new cluster is coming at just the right time for our DFI participants. I had lot of questions last week about Class Sites and todays exercises filled in much of the knowledge required.

Collaborate Sites - Day 5 - DFI Online

 LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other

  • People are busy! Think the ongoing changes in lockdown levels even outside of Auckland has had an impact on peoples' energy levels that we don't really recognise yet. People are tired.

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani:

  • Visible Learning - kaupapa words - the joists of the floor... hold it all up
  • Visible teaching and learning
  • Either you can see it... or you can't see it
  • Is it visible to the learner, whānau, teacher and my colleagues
  • Failure because we've kept the learning journey 'hidden'?
  • Wandering through a maze... the journey for many wanting success
  • Cultural Capital... knowledge begins at home with parents that have been successful at school
  • Every part of the learning journey to be visible to the learner
  • 'No Surprises' is the heart of every effective organisation... why do we withhold things from our learners?
  • Visibility at all kinds of levels
  • Passwords... is this password truly necessary? What is actually being protected?
  • A change of mindset

3. Deep Dive:

  • Multimodel communication reaches them, suits them and engages them
  • opposite side of the spectrum to one size fits all
  • Part of job is selling the love of learning
  • Home page should have that 'wow' factor that draws learners in - it's your shop front window... hooking students in visually
  • Multimodal design for behavioural engagement / Mult-textural design for cognitive engagement

4. Hapara Hot Tips #4:

  • Sharing Tab - unshared/public/external/all docs/trash
  • Do a regular Drive tidy

5. Explore:

  • Looking at some class sites

6. Chalk 'n Talk

  • Introduction to Google Sites
  • Buttons!!! Oh how I love thee! Especially using ColourPick to match colours!
7. Explore:
  •  What a fabulous resource. Need to share with every teacher I know!
8. Online Levelling Up:
  • We were working in groups to research a topic to create a Google Site from scratch. I got a bit confused about the big idea here as we moved between the Multi-Text Database, Jamboard and Google Sites so didn't develop my new site very thoroughly. I am confident that I know can navigate around Google Sites quite well. But it didn't come together at all well today. Never mind... tomorrow is another day!
CREATE: Making meaning of content
  • Create a multi modal site for your learners

This will be a work in progress as I want to tinker around a bit more with my Acids and Bases Site... so watch this space!

  • Blogging Tips - Labels - Do this already, if I remember too...

Dealing with Data - Day 4 - DFI Online

LEARN:
1. Connecting with each other

  • Really encouraging to hear our bubble peeps getting excited about using the tools they have learnt about in the DFI in their classroom and the kids responding positively to it. Go Jason!

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani - SHARE

  • Digital 'sharing' came into its own during our first lockdown in Manaiakalani schools
  • Sharing is something we are born to do!
  • Social media changed sharing by speed and amplification
  • When the world changed... 2005... birth of YouTube/twitter/Ebo
  • "Work with learners to establish an authentic audience for their learning outcomes"
  • Sharing with purpose... an audience... beyond the local community - globally
  • Interesting to hear why Blogger was chosen for sharing - learning to be CyberSmart in real time
  • Sharing can be a starting place for more learning - it becomes a cyclic process

3. Chalk 'n Talk - Google Forms

  • Google Forms

- "allowing Google to do the hard work for me"

- send people the correct link!

- loved the pool testing form Jeremy!

4. Explore - Creating a Form

  • Feel more confident about using this tool as I have now had a chance to develop and use forms a bit lately

5. Deep Dive - Google My Maps / Hāpara Hot Tips

  • mymaps.google.com
  • fascinating as I have never played with this - could be used for whānaungatanga with classes after doing their digital pepeha
  • careful not to share home addresses!

6. Exploring My Maps

  • Sooo cool! Lots to explore here!

My Maps Pepeha

7. Deep Dive - Google Sheets 101

  • freezing first row/column (via view or grey lines)
  • resizing all columns together
  • using formula like SUM/AVERAGE and autofill function (+)
  • changing format of date using more format
  • plain text when using phone numbers
  • filtering (a funnel icon)
  • auto fill for months of the year/days of the week/numbering patterns - really cool feature
  • * for 'times by'
  • shortcut to see all sheets = bottom left
  • = sparkline gets a line graph for a student
  • alternating colours to change spreadsheet colours
  • format, conditional formating
  • split text to column to separate whole names to first/last name etc
  • click in top right of a cell to sort column

9. Chalk 'n Talk - Sheets on Speed

  • how to use sheets for exam data:

- averages

- sorting averages

- create charts - use explore tool for suggestions

- select one chart use the three dots, move to own sheet

10. ONLINE Levelling Up - Sheets

  • Oh dear... this was a bit of a disaster to start off! Couldn't work out why things weren't working for me until Campbell noticed that I hadn't made a copy of the sheet and was trying to edit a 'view only' one! Note to self... always check that if things don't seem to be working!
  • I seem to have two left thumbs... fingers.. when it comes to navigating cells. Try it three times and it won't select the correct cell, try it again and it works! I am pretty good at navigating Excel Spreadsheets; I didn't expect Google sheets to not be my friend... I will have to practice a bit more...
  • A-ha! A tip from Vicky - use an external mouse rather than the trackpad! Of course!

Playing with Google Forms

CREATE
Making meaning of content

  • Analysing data from a student's blog - this required a bit of 'head scratching' to embed the graph without it being a huge size! Need to make sure the graph is embedded from the original spreadsheet, rather than trying to embed it if you have moved it to its own spreadsheet

  • ANALYSIS: The large increase in 2020 may have been a direct result of increased blogging due to lockdown or maybe just a different teacher with a heavier emphasis on blogging?
Blogging
  • Inviting your personal account is a really important step. Witnessed this in the flesh in a classroom in Auckland last week. Matt made a teachers' day by adding her personal email and allowing her to access a blog she had had at a previous school
  • Must try this: Creating a link in a blog comment <a href="insert URL here">Insert display text here</a>

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Loved hearing the reasons behind choosing to use Blogger as the Manaiakalani platform for sharing. It all makes sense when you hear the reasoning behind choosing Blogger, even though it has its detractors.

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

MyMaps is awesome! I can see me losing quite a few hours having a play with around that tool!

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Google forms as a tool to use in collecting student voice, or in my case as a feedback from teachers about how an in-class support session went.

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I think for the first time today I really hit something that was hard for me to get my head around! I really struggled with Google Sheets and I didn't think I would. I just couldn't get the cursor to work properly in highlighting, dragging cells etc.

But... I suspect my problem was not having an external mouse. Thank you to Vicky for suggesting that because I was beginning to think I was going a bit nuts!

Media - Day 3 - DFI Online

Trying a new system with my post today to make it make a bit more sense if I ever come back to it ...

LEARN:

1. Connecting with each other
    Hāpara Hot Tips

  • Great to be able to see how Hāpara is used to manage classroom activities and to see how the folders are set up. Looking forward to introducing this tool to our Manaiakalani cluster teachers if they have not used it before.

2. Connecting with Manaiakalani

  • Today we focused on CREATE and these were some of the info bites that caught my attention:
"It's all about the Hook"
I think this is particularly important with boys. If we don't catch them in the first few minutes... something else will.

"Creative skills help students become better problem solvers, communicators and collaborators"

This reminded me of a quote from a previous Science Advisor, Sir Paul Callaghan

"You don't need to teach a child curiosity. Curiosity in innate. You just have to be careful not to squash it. This is the challenge for the teacher - to foster and guide that curiosity"

How important it is to CREATE!

"Creators of content, not merely consumers"

Choice is important... I think especially as kids move through their educational journey. Choice gives learners ownership. Sadly we often see choice diminish as kids reach higher levels of learning. Remember what you told your own children when they were little... "You can be anything you want to be!" but that often becomes "You need to choose what career path you want follow" as a young adult.

"Learned locally, created locally but shared globally!"

3. Chalk 'n Talk

  • YouTube: this chalk and talk was particularly helpful for me as although I am (sometimes!) a consumer of YouTube, I was unaware of how to create a playlist and to change settings. This learning was then reinforced by returning to our Digital Bubbles to create and explore playlists... although technology did not play ball here with me and neither my MacBook Air nor Ipad Pro took forever to load the examples

4. Explore

5. Deep Dive

  • Media Dorothy's deep dive into Media was very illuminating. My children all use SISOMO (sight, sound and media) naturally whenever they create using technology. They are continually using our phones to film mini films, one son has a piece of green material he uses as a green screen, another has set up a recording studio to record his music, whilst another using computer animation fluently. All of this happened a bit around us as adults without us even really encouraging them to do it! So we can take no credit. What I did appreciate was Dorothy saying that it doesn't cost a lot to get the basics to film well!

6. Chalk 'n Talk

  • Google Draw - great to have a few more tips shared with this tool

7. Explore

8. Chalk 'n Talk

  • Google Slides - oh my goodness! Slides... the bain of all presenters/facilitators! When they are done well (as Dorothy always models) they are awesome. Done poorly, they are a disaster. Using post-it notes to help plan is brilliant. One book I have found helpful is 'The Back of a Napkin' by Dan Roam. The 'story' is sooo important. And pictures DO tell a thousand words!

9. Explore

10. Levelling Up

  • Awesome to be able to spend some time with Jeremy to ask more detailed questions about YouTube and it's usage in the classroom

and answer the four FOCUS questions: (TBC)

1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I think what struck me today was that good teachers have always used CREATE to hook in kids to learning. Think about your favourite teachers growing up... you loved being in their class because you got to DO cool stuff with them. You didn't even realise you were learning!

2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Becoming more familiar with Google Draw and Google Slides.

3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Google Slides will be used to supplement my CyberSmart lessons.

4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Having a YouTube channel and being able to navigate around it confidently has given me street 'cred' with the teenagers in our house!
