Hāpara Hot Tips
- Great to be able to see how Hāpara is used to manage classroom activities and to see how the folders are set up. Looking forward to introducing this tool to our Manaiakalani cluster teachers if they have not used it before.
2. Connecting with Manaiakalani
- Today we focused on CREATE and these were some of the info bites that caught my attention:
"It's all about the Hook"I think this is particularly important with boys. If we don't catch them in the first few minutes... something else will.
"Creative skills help students become better problem solvers, communicators and collaborators"
This reminded me of a quote from a previous Science Advisor, Sir Paul Callaghan
"You don't need to teach a child curiosity. Curiosity in innate. You just have to be careful not to squash it. This is the challenge for the teacher - to foster and guide that curiosity"
How important it is to CREATE!
"Creators of content, not merely consumers"
Choice is important... I think especially as kids move through their educational journey. Choice gives learners ownership. Sadly we often see choice diminish as kids reach higher levels of learning. Remember what you told your own children when they were little... "You can be anything you want to be!" but that often becomes "You need to choose what career path you want follow" as a young adult.
"Learned locally, created locally but shared globally!"
3. Chalk 'n Talk
- YouTube: this chalk and talk was particularly helpful for me as although I am (sometimes!) a consumer of YouTube, I was unaware of how to create a playlist and to change settings. This learning was then reinforced by returning to our Digital Bubbles to create and explore playlists... although technology did not play ball here with me and neither my MacBook Air nor Ipad Pro took forever to load the examples

5. Deep Dive
- Media Dorothy's deep dive into Media was very illuminating. My children all use SISOMO (sight, sound and media) naturally whenever they create using technology. They are continually using our phones to film mini films, one son has a piece of green material he uses as a green screen, another has set up a recording studio to record his music, whilst another using computer animation fluently. All of this happened a bit around us as adults without us even really encouraging them to do it! So we can take no credit. What I did appreciate was Dorothy saying that it doesn't cost a lot to get the basics to film well!
6. Chalk 'n Talk
- Google Draw - great to have a few more tips shared with this tool

8. Chalk 'n Talk
- Google Slides - oh my goodness! Slides... the bain of all presenters/facilitators! When they are done well (as Dorothy always models) they are awesome. Done poorly, they are a disaster. Using post-it notes to help plan is brilliant. One book I have found helpful is 'The Back of a Napkin' by Dan Roam. The 'story' is sooo important. And pictures DO tell a thousand words!

10. Levelling Up
- Awesome to be able to spend some time with Jeremy to ask more detailed questions about YouTube and it's usage in the classroom

11. Getting creative with Slides...
- Brilliant to be able to combine instruction on a great pepeha with slide tricks. It's a work in progress Makaore... will try and do some layering just for you!
Kia ora Meryn,
ReplyDeleteLove that you've got street 'cred' from a DFI! This is fantastic! Some great thoughts shared here. It's so true about those teachers we loved - ones that provided those opportunities for us to get into that creative space! Such a powerful learning opportunity. And I really agree with your comment about hooking those learners in. If we don't, something else will and then they are lost to the lesson we are trying to teach! Your pepeha looks great, I love the images you've used.
Ngā mihi nui
